Projectors are the personal choice of people who are keen on having a home cinema experience. Movie buffs in particular should check out Epson’s new Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000 laser projector, which projects true 4K resolution images more cheaply.

The new Epson Pro Cinema 4K PRO-UHD LS12000 uses three LCDs inside the projector, one for red, green and blue light, but each is limited to HD resolutions only or 1920 x 1080 pixels. The LS12000 operates at a faster refresh rate to achieve a 4K resolution of 3840×2160 pixels on the screen, increasing the resolution by shifting the position of the pixels projected on the screen for each frame.

Lasers continue to replace high-intensity bulbs in projectors for many reasons. Not only do they power up to full brightness instantly (no need for the projector to “heat up”), they’re also more energy efficient and last much longer than traditional lamp light sources.

Compared to the 2,000-hour life of a light bulb, the laser’s 20,000-hour lifespan can outlast other electronics in the device, making long-term use even more economical. Also, the focused intensity of the laser light source can dramatically increase a projector’s ability to display deep blacks, and Epson claims the new LS12000 can deliver 2,700 lumens with a contrast ratio of over 2,500,000:1.

The Epson LS12000 is designed for use in a home theater environment where the lighting in the room is optimized for complete control and screen projection. Depending on the lighting conditions in the room, the projector can produce images up to 300 inches in size, but only if the projector is placed more than 1.8 meters from the screen.

Other features include two HDMI 2.1 ports with HDCP 2.3 and a 120Hz refresh rate with support for an eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel), 10-bit HDR color processing and the option to upscale content with lower frame rates is found.

Available at $5,000 for the US market, the Epson Pro Cinema LS12000 4K PRO-UHD Laser Projector isn’t cheap, but it’s far more affordable than other tri-chip laser 4K projectors from companies like Sony.
