Microsoft has recently started showing more ads to mobile users in its Outlook Android and iOS app.
Outlook Lite Android app is now available
Ads that are indistinguishable from real emails
The Outlook mobile app gives users the option to organize their inbox: an inbox that collects all emails in one place, and a focused and subdivided tabbed inbox that sorts emails by importance. For those who use Outlook for free, ads were shown in the other tab, now ads have started to appear for those who do not use focused design.
Microsoft is pushing subscription
With the new update, the Outlook mobile app started showing more ads in more places. Even tapping the Focused tab pops up ads that could easily be mistaken for an actual email. It seems that free Outlook users will not be able to avoid ads unless they purchase a Microsoft 365 subscription. Even if the ad mails can be hidden by swiping, after a short time another ad starts to appear in the same place. A Microsoft spokesperson says that if the focused inbox feature is turned on, ads will only appear in the other inbox.
Ratings are starting to drop
After these intrusive ads, the Outlook mail app, which received 5 stars in the App Store, will drop its rating. Users, while criticizing Microsoft on social networking platforms, started to give 1 point in the app store.
