Adobe has developed an experimental AI-based tool that greatly improves the quality of low-resolution GIFs and videos. Currently, this technology has not become a fully ready-to-use application or feature, but it can be said that it has great potential.

The tool, called Project Res-Up, uses artificial intelligence to analyze the image and improve its quality. Adobe offered a small clip from the 1947 movie Red House as an example. The resolution was increased from 480 x 360 to 1280 x 960, increasing the total pixel count by 675%.

The results in the examples are amazing

The resulting image was much clearer, with the AI removing much of the blurriness and even adding new details like strands of hair. While the result still bears some traces of artifact, considering the poor video quality it offers a pretty impressive improvement over other upscaling tools like Nvidia’s TV Shield or Microsoft’s Video Super Resolution.

In the baby elephant video, you can notice how Project Res-Up improves the image by focusing on the animal’s skin. Wrinkles on the skin have become more visible. It also seems that details such as sunlight reflections on water become more evident. It is not yet clear when Project Res-Up will be available.
