Due to various reasons such as seasons or natural events, dangers can be encountered frequently in sea transportation. Precautions should be taken by calculating every possibility that may occur, especially in large cargo ships.
The measures taken against possible dangers or the mishaps experienced are very effective in the development of ship technology. Today, thanks to the developing technology, ships have become a safe means of transportation. The problem of tilting, which is very common in ships due to the effect of waves, can be brought under control with an active tank system.
How does the system that prevents ships from tilting due to waves work?
Active tank system in its simplest definition; It is used to control the movement of the ship caused by any waves. This system ensures the balance of the ships and prevents the ship from tilting. In the system, which is basically based on the control of the air pressure on the water surface, the balance is provided by filling the tanks under the ship against the problem of tilting due to loading or wave movements with the effect of weather conditions.
The system is currently used in two ways. In the first, there are two containers on both sides of the ship, connected by a canal. There is water in these containers to provide balance and balance is provided by the movement of water between the channel connected to the wave movement. The other and newer system works with sensors that detect motion. The ship’s air duct has valves actuated by a sensor that detects its slant. Thanks to these valves, a flow pump is used to prevent the tank from shaking due to reasons such as rolling and shaking of the water. This flow pump also provides balance with the movement of the water in the tanks. Active tanks are 80% or more efficient at blocking movement, depending on the sophistication of the system used.
