On February 21, 2023, due to the posts on Ekşi Sözlük, the Information Technologies and Communications Authority (BTK) imposed an access block on the entire site. Ekşi Sözlük, which has been closed for nine days, is reopening as of today.

The request to remove the access block has been accepted.

As a result of Ekşi Sözlük’s objection, the 4th Criminal Court of Peace accepted the objection and it was decided to lift the access barrier. The relevant authorities were contacted for the implementation of the decision. Access to Ekşi Sözlük will be blocked by all operators and internet service providers in the coming hours. Ekşi Sözlük CEO Başak Purut shared the images of the decision on her Twitter account.

Why was Ekşi Sözlük closed?

Ekşi Sözlük was blocked on the basis of the justifications in Article 8/A of the Internet Law No. 5651. Article 8/A added to the Law No. 5651 on Arranging Broadcasts on My Internet and Combating Crimes Committed Through These Broadcasts in 2015 contains the following statements:

“The Presidency or the national security and public order, the prevention of crime, in cases where the judge or delay is inconvenient due to one or more of the reasons such as the right to life and the protection of life and property of persons, the protection of national security and public order, the prevention of crime or the protection of general health. or upon the request of the Ministries related to the protection of general health, the President may decide to remove the content and/or block access regarding the broadcast on the internet.
