It is claimed that the device named Ox64, which will be released soon by Hong Kong-based single-board computer manufacturer Pine64, can shake the throne of Raspberry Pi. So how will the company do this?

A short time ago, 3 models of Raspberry Pi were introduced. The cards, which attract attention with their very cheapness, were offered to consumers in the form of Raspberry Pi Pico W, H and WH. However, now a new model is emerging that can rival them in terms of price, and it is none other than Ox64.

The Ox64 will be built on the RISC-V architecture to be a direct competitor to the Raspberry Pi Pico W. While Pine64 has yet to make an official announcement on the subject, a post it shares gives a pretty detailed clue as to what to expect.

According to the shared information, the card, which has 2 Alibaba T-head cores, one 62-bit and the other 32-bit in its CPU, has 64MB of DRAM with a larger capacity compared to Pico W’s 264Kb. It also uses a Bouffalo Lab AI engine for video/audio detection and recognition.

What are the Pine64 Ox64 Features?

In terms of connectivity, the board has built-in Wi-Fi like the Raspberry Pi Pico W. Ox64 uses the Wi-Fi 4 standard and connects to 2.4GHz channels. While Wi-Fi 6 home devices are starting to gain serious attention, Wi-Fi 4 will be enough for most users. In addition, Bluetooth 5 with Bluetooth Low Energy support and Zigbee for smart home enthusiasts are also on the card.

The card’s onboard storage is limited to 128Mb / 16MB, but there is support for SDHC/SDXC microSD cards. The USB 2.0 port also provides further expansion, thanks to SPI, I2C and UART functionality, as well as 26 GPIO pins placed outside the module and a USB-C port for power.

Like the Raspberry Pi Pico W, the Ox64 measures 51x21mm. However, with 19 mm, it is a slightly thicker card than the Pico W.

Ox64 is likely to support Linux OS like Raspberry Pi. It is also expected to be priced under $10 / £10 just like its most important competitor.
