We know that Samsung, which wants to increase its share in the foldable smartphone market, is researching phones with rollable screens. But the latest patent application has revealed Samsung’s project with both a rollable and transparent screen.
Samsung patents a rollable phone with a transparent screen
The latest patent study submitted to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) reveals what Samsung thinks for the future of smartphones. It was noted that there is a transparent section in the application with a rollable screen.
Patent drawings from Samsung submitted to WIPO outlined the smartphone not only having a rollable screen, but also a transparent handset embedded in the screen. The application actually featured two different designs, but both featured a transparent, rollable screen: One design considered expanding the rollable panel from the side and the other opening it vertically.
It is said that the part of the screen that extends outward will be transparent in both cases, regardless of vertical or horizontal. This design can create interesting experiences for Augmented Reality (AR) applications.
According to Samsung, the extended screen portion can show digital objects while allowing to see the real background. For example, in an augmented reality game, it will become easier to see targets in a real background or to text while walking.
Foldable devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 more or less showed what a curved screen in the middle would offer. Having two applications side by side on the screen was one of the most basic examples.
Considering that most of the patent applications do not come true, it seems unlikely that we will see a rollable phone with a transparent screen from Samsung anytime soon. But we can add foldable and rollable screens as well as transparent screens to the list of future technologies.
