Telegram has announced that it has more than 700 million monthly active users. The instant messaging platform also announced that it has launched a premium subscription system with additional features to try to monetize some of its large user base. The firm asks for a fee of $4.99 to $6 for a premium membership.
Premium options add a number of additional and improved features to Telegram. Telegram Premium allows users to send files up to 4GB (more than 2GB) and supports faster downloads.
Paying customers can also follow up to 1,000 channels instead of the 500 available to free users, and create up to 20 chat folders with up to 200 chats in each. Telegram Premium users can also add up to four accounts and pin 10 chats.
Telegram founder and CEO Pavel Durov said earlier this month that the premium membership is aimed at responding to demand from users who want additional storage/bandwidth. Some analysts have previously claimed that they think Telegram can monetize the platform through its blockchain token project. However, after several delays and problems, Telegram abandoned the project in 2020 and returned the $ 1.2 billion it had collected from investors.
