Wireless charging technology, on which we put our phone on a platform, has gradually become a new standard today. On the other hand, the world of technology continues to develop the cable and air charging technology that will completely eliminate these stands. Big news came today about this technology, which Xiaomi previously announced that it is working on.

According to a new study published in the journal Optics Express, scientists set a new record for charging distance in air charging technology. Using infrared lasers, scientists managed to charge a device 30 meters away with infrared light from the lasers. The total power obtained from a distance of 30 meters with the light was announced as 85 mW.

For now, only small devices can be charged:

The power obtained from the system was quite sufficient, especially for charging devices such as small sensors. Moreover, this power was achieved with extremely small hardware, as you can see in the photo above. The photovoltaic cell-coated receiver, which converts the light from the laser into charging power, was only 10 millimeters in diameter. So the receiver was sized to fit easily into almost any electronic device.

The light emitted from the laser does not pose any health hazards. While the central wavelength of the laser is announced as 1550 nanometers, this value is in the safest part of the infrared spectrum. In other words, the light from the laser cannot harm human skin or eyes. The next step for scientists is, of course, to get enough power to charge smartphones and other large devices.

The technology that Xiaomi introduced last year:
