Netflix’s new “Profile Transfer” option allows users to transfer personalized recommendations, watch history, playlists, saved games and other settings to a new account. This feature will ensure that people who share their account with friends or relatives will not lose personalized features when they decide to open a new account. Also, if you change the password and leave the people you share with now out of your Netflix account, it will be used to prevent them from starting from scratch when they start the Netflix experience on their own.
Another reason for Netflix to switch to this system seems to be to force users to open private accounts and increase the number of accounts. The company says that more than 100 million users use Netflix with this password sharing method.
Netflix describes the Profile Transfer feature this way: “People move. Families grow. Relationships end. But throughout these life changes, your Netflix experience must stay the same. Today, when people who share your account start their own memberships, they can offer personalized recommendations, viewing history, playlists, saved games, and other services. We are introducing Profile Transfer, a feature that allows them to transfer settings to a new profile.”
Either way, Profile Transfer guides the user through the process of starting a new Netflix account from an existing profile. It leaves a backup copy of the profile on the current account. The system has been being tested in Chile, Costa Rica and Peru since March, now it will start rolling out worldwide.
