Although we often associate NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) with space-related news, we sometimes forget the ‘Aviation’ part of the organization’s name. The organization actually has a lot of work on earth as well as in space.
In fact, with one of these studies, a newborn island was discovered on Earth. Let’s take a look at how this island discovered in the Pacific Ocean came to be and the details of the event.
New island discovered in the Pacific Ocean emerged due to volcanic eruptions in Tonga
(The black dots you see in the photo are the island itself.)
A new island was born due to the eruption of the Home Reef volcano in the Tonga Islands, located in the Pacific Ocean. According to NASA, this island became visible 11 hours after the lava eruption and ash eruption that began on September 10.
Tonga Geological Services states that the island is about 10 meters above sea level and 4,000 square meters wide. 6 days after the event took place, the width of the island reached 24,000 m2.
However, according to NASA’s statement, the life of the island will not be long. Since a large part of the island is formed from volcanic reactions, the island will soon disappear due to both erosion and environmental factors. What are you thinking?
