Rapid approval for breath tests as a Covid-19 test method

The FDA granted emergency use authorization for a COVID-19 diagnostic test using breath samples the other day. The new test method, currently known as the “InspectIR COVID-19 Breathalyzer test”, detects five chemical compounds found in the exhaled breath of COVID patients.

FDA, in its press release, announced that the new device to be used in Covid-19 test methods is approximately the size of a hand luggage. While it is stated that the device capacity is 160 tests per day, there is no explanation about the price of the device yet.

FDA Center for Devices and Radiological Health director Dr. “Today’s authorization is another example of the rapid innovation happening in diagnostic testing for COVID-19,” Jeff Shuren explained.

In a study conducted on 2409 people, in line with the news that InspectIR COVID-19 Breathalyzer gave 91.2% accurate results for positive COVID cases. In negative Covid-19 tests, this rate is 99.3 percent. The FDA has announced that positive results may need to be confirmed by molecular tests, namely PCR.
