Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer XPeng has long been developing flying electric cars through its subsidiary XPeng Aeroht. The company made its first public flight, taking the fifth-generation prototype of the vehicle to the skies of Dubai.

The demonstration flight, witnessed by approximately 150 people, was held on the opening day of the GITEX Global technology fair in Dubai. The model, called the XPeng X2, took off with a special permit from the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority.

Aerodynamic design, autonomous mode

Equipped with a carbon fiber body to reduce weight, the flying car has a minimalist teardrop design that improves aerodynamics. The XPeng X2, which has manual and autonomous driving modes, will be used for short flights at low altitudes.

It’s a fifth-generation prototype that made its debut in the demonstration flight, but the company is currently working on a sixth-generation. The fifth generation can only fly, not land. The future model will be able to be driven both in the air and on the road. The flying car is scheduled to go on sale in 2024.

XPeng X2 features:

  • Capacity: 2 people
  • Dimensions: 5 x 4.78 x 1.36 meters
  • Weight: 560 kg
  • Load capacity: 200 kg
  • Maximum speed: 130 km/h
  • Flight altitude: 1,000 meters
  • Flight time: 35 minutes
