Paleontologists in Argentina announced that they had discovered a new species of giant dinosaur called Meraxes gigas (M.gigas). The newly discovered species has small arms compared to its large head, like Tyrannosaurus rex(T.rex).

A new species of dinosaur, measuring 11 meters long and weighing more than four tons, was found in a study conducted in Argentina’s northern Patagonia region. The species, named M.gigas, belongs to a group known as the carcharodontosauridae, which were large, predatory theropod dinosaurs that lived during the Cretaceous period 145 to 66 million years ago.
Researchers found a complete arm, foot, and skull of the dinosaur, which they thought was 45 years old when it died.
“The fossil of M. gigas shows complete parts of the skeleton that have never been seen before, such as arms and legs, which help us understand some evolutionary trends and the anatomy of carcharodontosauridae,” said paleontologist Juan Canale of the Ernesto Bachmann Museum of Paleontology. says.
The team says M.gigas may have evolved into T.rex and that the new species went extinct almost 20 million years before T.rex. Although both dinosaurs have large heads and small arms, it is stated that their bone structures are different.
