A Canadian woman saw her home invaded by a devastating intruder from outer space, and luckily she survived and was able to tell the story. There are no malevolent aliens in this story, just a meteorite that came to Ruth Hamilton’s bed in British Columbia after a long journey.
Speaking to the CBC, Hamilton said that on the evening of October 3, he was awakened by the barking of his dog while he was sleeping. “Then I just had a big explosion and debris all over my face,” says Hamilton. “I lifted one of the two pillows I was sleeping on, and there was a meteorite in between.”
A fireball matched the time of the meteorite that punctured its roof in the Golden town of Hamilton, Canada, was also caught on camera.
Researchers in Canada are now asking residents in the area to check their own cars or security cameras for additional footage, and to check outside (and perhaps under beds) for other meteorites that may have remained from the event.
“We strongly anticipate dozens more meteorites to fall and we encourage residents to be vigilant,” planetary scientist Alan Hildebrand of the University of Calgary said in a statement.
The melon-sized space stone that hit Hamilton’s bed was charcoal gray and weighed about 1.3 kilograms. A second, smaller meteorite was found near the town, CTV News reported.
Although meteorites reach the surface of our planet almost every day, an event this close is extremely rare. Another example of these rare occurrences happened to a woman from Alabama in 1954, who was injured by a meteorite hitting her hip while she was sleeping in bed!
Hamilton said he was shaken but unharmed by the incident and wanted to repair the hole in his roof. He also said he plans to keep the meteorite. . .
