A man named Walter Orthmann achieved two important achievements in his life last month. Orthmann, who turned 100 years old in good health, has also written his name in the Guinnes World Records.
Orthmann holds the world record for longest working time at a company. According to the Guinness World Records, Orthmann’s professional career began exactly 84 years ago.
Started business at age 15
Orthmann worked as a shipping assistant at Industrias Renaux SA, a textile company located in the Brazilian state of Santa Catarina, now known as RenauxView. He was only 15 when he started working. In a statement to the Guinness World Records, Orthmann stated that he was taken by his mother to find a job as the eldest of a family of five children. “In 1938, children were expected to work to support the family,” Orthmann said.
Applying for a job at a nearby weaving mill, Orthmann was immediately hired because of his strong German proficiency. And so began Orthmann’s 84-year career at RenauxView, where he would continue to work for many years to come. Orthmann first began working for the company as a shipping assistant, and was eventually promoted to a role in the sales department and eventually to the position of sales manager.
Working at RenauxView gave Orthmann the opportunity to travel all over Brazil, meet people from different countries; But Orthmann’s favorite part of having a job was the purpose, commitment, and routine that came with it. It can be said that Orthmann, who pays attention to exercise every day and goes to the office every morning, owes his 100 years of life to this.
“When we do what we love, we don’t see time pass”
You know how difficult it is to find a job where you can make money while enjoying yourself. According to Orthmann, the secret to finding a career you love that will last a lifetime is to follow your passions and find an employer that aligns with your goals and values.
Noting that “We don’t see time pass when we do what we love,” Orthmann states that his new world record holder status is his “proudest achievement”. It is worth noting that with this new record, Orthmann once again broke his own record, which he broke in 2019 by working 81 years and 85 days at RenauxView.
However, Orthmann states that during his 84-year career, he has learned that the secret to success is to focus on what’s in front of you. “I don’t plan much, I don’t care about tomorrow,” said Orthmann. You have to deal with the present, not the past or the future… What matters is the here and now.” he adds.
Guinness World Records, on the other hand, did not provide any information on when Orthmann will retire. We hope that everyone will be lucky enough to get a job opportunity like Orthmann that they will be deeply committed to and work with love.
