As we all know, meteorites (asteroids) approaching the Earth are frequently on the agenda every year. Of course, the possibility of these stones hitting our planet has been a nightmare for many people. In fact, the movie Don’t Look Up, which was released on Netflix last month, also revealed how scenarios could occur in such a situation.
Now, scientists have announced that a giant meteorite, which is more than twice the length of the Empire State Building in New York, is approaching the Earth. But there is no need for any fear; because this meteor will not hit the Earth, it will just pass close by.
Observable with a telescope
According to the news reported by Live Science, astronomers discovered that a one kilometer long meteorite is approaching our planet. This large meteorite is classified as ‘potentially dangerous’; however, it was among the statements that it would not hit the Earth. In addition, experts stated that this object, which will pass near us, can be seen with a small telescope.
According to the explanations (7482), this meteorite, named 1994 PC1, will pass at 00:51 at night, connecting the night of January 18 to January 19. Scientists say that the object will be found at a distance of 1.9 million kilometers; He added that this is why it is described as a “Near-Earth Object (NEO)”. It was also among the statements that the size of more than 140 meters was the reason why the meteorite was described as “potentially dangerous”.
Stating that 28 thousand NEO types of meteorites have been discovered so far, experts added that the asteroid, which can be observed in the coming days, is not approaching the Earth for the first time. According to NASA, this asteroid passed within 1.1 million kilometers of Earth in 1933. In addition, it was reported by scientists that the same meteorite could visit us in 2105.
