Windows 11 will soon get a new feature in the system tray section of the taskbar, which is the notification area, that will show you if you are connected to VPN. In this way, you will be able to see at a glance that the VPN on your system is active and your connection is secure.

VPN usage is on the rise. Companies, employees and standard users alike are increasingly seeking to hide their data. In this context, since your Online data is treated as commercial property, many users have started using VPN services to hide their identities while browsing the web, streaming movies or downloading files. Similarly, companies are expanding the use of VPNs in-house.

VPN status indicator coming to Windows 11 status bar

In this context, it becomes more and more important to instantly monitor whether the VPN connection is ongoing. Microsoft is bringing a feature to Windows 11 that will make this tracking easier. For now the VPN status indicator is valid for Windows 11 ‘Dev’ build 25247. In this version, a small shield icon is displayed above the Network icon in the system tray when you connect to a VPN network.

Unfortunately, there are some limitations to the new feature as it only works when connecting to VPNs configured using the built-in Windows 11 client and not WiFi. The new feature seems to work for now if you connect to a VPN from the quick setting or the Network & Internet > VPN page in Settings.

However, it should be noted that this feature is still under development and is in the early stages of testing. On the other hand, Microsoft is constantly testing these and similar features in the Windows Insider program, and some of them may never be implemented.
