Most portable desalination systems require water to be passed through filters. But MIT’s new device uses electricity to remove particles from the water. According to the statements, the system uses ion concentration polarization (ICP) instead of a filter to produce drinking water. Additionally, let’s say that ICP does not always remove all the salts from the water. Researchers use a process called electrodialysis to solve this problem and get rid of residual salts. As a result, the system works successfully and ensures the production of drinking water.

The device is attracting great attention with the possibility of producing drinking water for large communities, relieving long-term concerns. Converting seawater to drinking water is important to many communities, especially small islands.
