According to the scientists, the system is based on a portable purification unit that can convert polluted water into drinking water without the need for filters and high-pressure pumps. This device, which is the size of a suitcase, can purify salt water with a single button. It is not impossible to convert sea water to drinking water; however, it should be noted that normally quite heavy and large purification systems are required for this.
Most portable desalination systems require water to be passed through filters. But MIT’s new device uses electricity to remove particles from the water. According to the statements, the system uses ion concentration polarization (ICP) instead of a filter to produce drinking water. Additionally, let’s say that ICP does not always remove all the salts from the water. Researchers use a process called electrodialysis to solve this problem and get rid of residual salts. As a result, the system works successfully and ensures the production of drinking water.
