The entire gaming world awaits the launch of the PlayStation Plus service. However, a statement made by PlayStation caused expectations to crash. Because, according to the plans made within the budget, the quality of AAA games will deteriorate.

PlayStation Plus games may not be PS5 quality!

According to the statement made by PlayStation, if developers plan to include their games in the PlayStation Plus service, they will have to cut their budgets and reduce the quality of AAA games. Because the company’s budget is not enough to meet this right now.

PlayStation manager Hiroki Totoki, who made a statement on the subject, said in his financial meeting with investors:

I will refrain from commenting on competitors’ strategy. Our current thinking is to have development costs and appropriate R&D investment for quality products. This will both improve the platform and improve the business in the long run.

If we offer AAA-type games on PS5 to subscription services, we may need to reduce the investment required for this. We are worried about this situation. Because it spoils the first-party game quality. That’s why we want to make sure we spend the appropriate development costs to properly promote solid products.

After this statement, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan made a similar statement that he had made before and said:

The games we make are growing. They are getting better and more beautiful. They are getting richer. It also strengthens the narrative. Putting these games on a subscription service soon after release would break this virtuous cycle and we wouldn’t be able to invest in the way we can right now. So, we don’t.

According to another statement made by Sony during the same call, the company wants to spend another 40 billion yen (roughly $308 million) on first-party games. The full statement is as follows:

We plan to increase software development expenses by approximately 40 billion yen, aimed at strengthening first-party software at our existing studios. Going forward, we aim to grow the gaming business by strengthening our first-party software and distributing it across multiple platforms.
