AMD wants to increase its dominance in the gaming laptop market. Having achieved success in mid-range gaming laptops, the company is now working on a new mobile CPU codenamed ‘Dragon Range’. The new processor family could go on sale as early as 2023.

AMD announced that it has changed its mobile CPU roadmap in a meeting it held the other day. The processor series, codenamed “Dragon Range”, which is not in the plans, will power “extreme gaming laptops” in 2023.

AMD made an unexpected launch following its earnings report for the first quarter of 2022. The company’s latest statement revealed that it is working on a mobile CPU called Dragon Range. According to the statement, Dragon Range will have the highest number of cores and threads ever.

In the previous Ryzen processors, more towards mid-segment (thin and light) laptops, AMD has turned its radar to gamers. According to the statement, this mobile CPU targets gaming laptops thicker than 20mm.

Dragon Range will be built on the Zen 4 architecture, which was made official at CES 2022 last January. As you may recall, AMD announced the Ryzen 7000 series, codenamed Raphael, at the event and said that it would hit the market at the end of 2022.

Robert Hallock, Director of Technical Marketing at AMD, claimed in a presentation for Dragon Range that it will have “the highest number of cores, threads and caches ever for a mobile gaming CPU.” Also Dragon Range; It will support DDR4 and PCI Express 5 and consume more than 55 watts of power.

In addition to Dragon Range, another mobile CPU named “Phoenix” was shared. It is stated that this processor, which is also stated to be introduced to the market in 2023, will appeal to thinner and lighter gaming laptops.
