Google introduced the Privacy Sandbox project for Android earlier this year. The project, which was developed as a new privacy-focused advertising system instead of using third-party cookies, was made available as a preview in the beta of Android 13.
The new privacy-focused ad system
With Google’s Privacy Sandbox project, ads will collect much less data, thus protecting users’ privacy. Privacy Sandbox will significantly reduce the exchange of personal data with third parties and reduce data flow between applications, including advertising ID.
Sandbox SDK and Topics API are available with the preview published by Google. With the preview, developers will learn about the new ad system and understand how the system will work with their programs. In particular, Topics API makes it easy to serve personal ads by giving importance to privacy. The Topics API determines the user’s top 5 areas of interest that week based on their Chrome browser’s search and browsing history. Partner publishers, on the other hand, can see these areas and offer personal advertisements without accessing users’ private data.
In addition, with Privacy Sandbox, Google has also made a preview of the Fledge API available. With Fledge, websites will be able to re-advertise to remind users to purchase items in their cart. Google is waiting for notifications and questions from the developers for the development of Privacy Sandbox. It seems that Google will seriously increase the importance it attaches to privacy with Android 13.
