Planning to offer retro productions to players with the renewed PlayStation Plus move, Sony also wants to protect PlayStation Classics productions. It turned out that the company set up a “protection team” for the games to be included in PS Plus.
The LinkedIn and Twitter posts of senior engineer Garrett Fredley, who joined Sony’s newly formed PlayStation protection team, more or less revealed what the team will do. According to Fredley’s statement, various tasks will be carried out, from archiving games to adding retro games to the PS Plus catalog.
PlayStation has set up a new game protection team
PlayStation has hired new employees to set up a game protection team. Garrett Fredley, who started working as a senior structural engineer at Sony, says he will be working on the “game protection” team for the first time in his career.
Sony has not disclosed any details about the protection team. However, it should be noted that Fredley was in the protection team for the FIFA series at EA Games between 2016-2019.
“My first day in senior structural engineering as one of the first recruits of the newly created Protection team for PlayStation. Game protection was my first career passion. It was my first step into the world of software engineering/development and a world that many were unaware of.”
It looks like PlayStation will archive the source code of both current and old games. It is also thought that this team will be responsible for bringing games from PlayStation Classics for inclusion in PlayStation Plus Deluxe.
Sony’s efforts to preserve its legacy have been the subject of controversy after its decision to close PS3, PS Vita and PSP stores last year. User reactions led Sony to take a step back for PS3 and PS Vita stores. But the PSP store was closed in 2021.
As you know, with PlayStation’s renewed Plus subscription, it will be possible to access games developed for old consoles. However, it is not yet clear how these games will be delivered (in mass or monthly updates).
