The cost of Stranger Things season 4 turned out to be more expensive than the last season of Game of Thrones and The Mandalorian combined.
The next season of the hit Netflix series cost $30 million per episode, according to The Wall Street Journal. Considering that the next season of the supernatural horror series will consist of nine episodes, this amount means that Netflix spent $270 million on season 4 of Stranger Things alone.
For comparison, the final season of Game of Thrones cost $15 million per episode, while the Star Wars hit series The Mandalorian had a similar budget for Disney and Lucasfilm. It’s also believed that the last Marvel series that aired exclusively on Disney Plus cost $25 million per episode.
So Netflix is doing everything it can to ensure that Stranger Things 4 is the biggest season of the TV series ever.
Still, Stranger Things season 4 won’t be the highest-grossing series to come in 2022. The first season of Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power reportedly premiered on Prime Video in September, costing $462 million, making it the most expensive TV series nominee of all time.
Of course, considering that the company has announced its decision to cut its expenses, the explanation about the production costs of Stranger Things 4 will not be very happy for other series that had to leave Netflix recently. The streaming giant’s trial of a new paid password sharing feature, as well as the slumping subscriber base and year-over-year growth slump, mean things aren’t looking very bright for Netflix right now.
After a hiatus of nearly three years, Stranger Things 4 Episode 1 will premiere on Netflix on Friday, May 27. Episode 2 will air five weeks later, on Friday, July 1.
Given the problems the streaming service has faced over the past year, Stranger Things season 4 might be the big-budget show Netflix needs right now.
