Google bans call recording apps

Google will change its developer policies on May 11. The technology giant will prevent third-party applications from recording audio from a call with an update to the Accessibility API. The company is making this change to use accessibility tools as intended.

Google has largely blocked third-party call recording apps on Android 6, and later on Android 10, eliminating the use of microphones for call recording. After these developments, call recording applications had to use the Accessibility API for the continuation of their functionality, but these tools, which were offered to the applications to make the lives of people with disabilities easier, were misused.

Regarding Google’s current policies: “Apps with core functionality aimed at directly supporting people with disabilities are eligible to use IsAccessibilityTool. Apps not eligible for IsAccessibilityTool cannot use the flag and must meet specific disclosure and permission requirements.
