Modern data centers today consume a lot of energy and require an extremely complex cooling process. It should also be noted that they are easily damaged by natural disasters. An American startup can prevent this with an interesting solution it plans to implement.

Cloud technology developer Lonestar Data Holdings has booked two spaceflights to deploy a prototype data center on the lunar surface. The Florida-based startup will send the small box-shaped data center to the moon as part of IM-2, the second Intuitive Machines mission to take place in 2023.

Nuclear-powered

Lonestar Data Holdings is reportedly planning to build a network of data centers on the moon. “Lonestar’s lunar data centers cost a little more than their world counterparts, but are cheaper to operate and require much less energy,” said company CEO Chris Stott.

It is stated that the data center planned to be established on the lunar surface will operate like a real network with internet access. The necessary energy will be provided by nuclear power and small nuclear reactors. For this, it is considered to use Helium-3 based reactors in the long term. Because there are plenty of Helium-3 isotopes on the Moon.
