The Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee of the European Parliament discussed the regulation change aiming to standardize different charging inputs such as USB-C, Micro USB and Lightning used in various electronic devices and accepted it with 43 “yes” and 2 “no” votes.

After the position on the regulation is voted in the EP General Assembly, negotiations with the member states will be started. However, the final implementation of any legislation does not take place until the text is finalized and the legal challenges are completed.

EU rules, which are expected to come into force in 2026 when all details are fully resolved, apply to almost all electronic devices.

With the application, devices such as smartphones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, portable video game consoles, speakers will have to have USB-C charging ports. Some small devices, such as smart watches and wristbands, will be exempt from the USB-C rule. Thus, people will no longer have to buy a new charger for each new device; A single charger can be used in different electronic devices.

The app means good news for Androids already using USB-C. Using a USB-C port on its new iPad and laptop computers, Apple continues to use a different port called lightning on its smartphones, some tablets and headphones. Apple previously claimed that uniform entry would harm innovation, increase electronic waste, and annoy the consumer.
