Samsung SDI’s experience in electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing may soon come into play for the mobile market as well. The company reportedly plans to use the stacking technology used in EV batteries to produce smartphone batteries with increased capacity. Switching to this technology can increase battery capacity by 10 percent. So it may be possible to use a 5,500 mAh battery of the same size as a traditional 5,000 mAh battery.
If the solution to increasing smartphone battery capacities is to switch to an EV-style stacked battery design, why hasn’t Samsung SDI done that yet? This is because the transition is not at all simple. Samsung is reportedly planning to manufacture bulk type smartphone batteries at its Cheonan facility in Seoul. According to industry sources, the company is expected to invest at least $85 million to replace its production lines.
There’s no timeframe yet on when we’ll see this new battery design on our Galaxy smartphones, but it may be available for the Galaxy S23 series.
