Portugal has granted a crypto license to one of the leading banks, Bison Bank. Thus, the country has granted a crypto license to a bank for the first time.
The Central Bank of Portugal authorized Bison Bank on Thursday to offer crypto custody and trading services. The country’s central bank, Banco de Portugal, said in a statement on the subject that Bison Bank has received a license to operate as a virtual asset service provider (VASP). The bank will also establish a special business division, Bison Digital Assets, to deal with this business.
Offering wealth management, deposit and investment banking services to individuals and corporate clients, Bison became the first bank to obtain a crypto license in Portugal.
The central bank granted its first full VASP license to crypto payments company Utrust last March. In June, it also licensed crypto exchanges Criptoloja and Mind The Coin to operate as a VASP.
