Smartphone users’ approaching 5 billion level and the fact that around 3 billion of them are on the Android side attracts the attention of intelligence agencies as well as cyber attackers. An interesting piece of software has surfaced this week.

A software development tool belonging to the Measurement Systems initiative, which develops cyber intelligence solutions for US national security agencies, has been found to be involved in many applications from weather to radar applications and prayer applications.

MS venture developers use this tool paying for. While data such as the user’s e-mail address, phone number and precise GPS location are collected, various metrics are provided to the developers via a control panel. The startup told the developers that it works on behalf of operators and financial services.
The tool is estimated to be used on approximately 60 million devices. Although the MS initiative denies the allegations, the software tool stopped collecting data after the news became available. Google has removed many applications from the store, but it is stated that there are still applications that carry this tool.
