Borderlands series is undoubtedly one of the most popular series in the gaming world. Especially with the second game, it was a series that kept me hooked. Its gameplay, humor quality and co-op support definitely elevate the quality of the game. That’s why the Borderlands series has always been one of my favorite series. Although it upset me a lot with the third game, the taste of the second game is still in my mouth. Due to the humor style of Borderlands, various Borderlands games can actually be extra remarkable with just this humor. That’s why I follow games set in the Borderlands universe. Last year, a game called Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, set in the Borderlands universe, was announced. Although it caught my attention at first, as always, I forgot about Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands due to the big games that came when the release date was approaching. I remembered with the release of the game, and I quickly entered the game by taking advantage of the no-game period. I have to say that I entered without being too hopeful, but the game satisfied me a lot. Now let’s move on to our review and take a closer look at it.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, published by 2K and developed by Gearbox Software, was released last week for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series and PC. I’ve been playing the game for a while too. We can actually start our review with the general structure and story of the game.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a game set in the board game of the Tina character we know from the Borderlands universe. In other words, it takes place in a universe established within the Borderlands universe. In a board game directed by Tiny Tina, you are the main character and you start the game by creating your character. Since the game is based on DnD logic, we can say that Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a role-playing game.
In fact, although the story and universe of the game is not exactly set in the Borderlands universe, the same absurdity and the same humor style are also present in this game. So I can say that the game is actually in the style of Borderlands’ DnD. That’s why the game has been enjoyable in this respect again. It is also very pleasant to see the Borderlands style in such a different universe, but unfortunately I can say that they could not distinguish the game from Borderlands in many respects. From here we can actually move on to character creation and abilities.
You create your character in the game, choose its class and start the game. Class selection and customization is varied, but not as detailed as AAA role-playing games. However, unlike Borderlands games, you can have various powers, which is the part where the game is different and beautiful. I would like to see the difference here actually on the weapon variety side. Unfortunately, the guns didn’t get far from the guns in Borderlands games. I think it would be much more enjoyable to see some more medieval style weapons. Instead, we start walking around with a sniper rifle again. However, since I like the weapon design style of Borderlands, this didn’t bother me too much, but as I said, I wish it hadn’t gone out of the theme too much. In fact, I can say that the game is very similar to the classic Borderlands games due to the similarity in the weapons, so if you are familiar with Borderlands games, it takes a very short time to get used to it.
As I said, this game is actually a board game. You play a character in a board game. Here, again, there is a different and beautiful detail. The game isn’t exactly open world. Regions are divided into regions. You walk around on the table like a little toy and you can switch to these areas. When you enter the regions, it switches to the game style we are used to. In other words, we can say that the game has cheated a little here, but it is pleasing to the eye because they eat this cheat well. In this way, the game has become a simpler game.
When we come to the visual side, as you can see, Borderlands-style graphics welcome us again, but this time with the new generation, coatings, long distance drawings and in general the quality is much better. I played the game on PlayStation 5 and it has to be said that the game looks much better with the power of the new generation. While in quality mode, I’ve had occasional minor issues, but in performance mode, the game offers a really smooth experience.
The voice-over part in the game needs to be opened in special parenthesis because the voice-overs are awesome. The game features Andy Samberg, known from Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Will Arnett, known from Bojack Horseman, Ashly Burch, whom we know from many games, and many more successful names.
Finally, we need to briefly talk about the co-op mode. Like other Borderlands games, this game also has co-op support and if you play it as co-op, the game becomes much more enjoyable.
Conclusion
To sum up, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is an intermediate game of Borderlands and the game itself makes this feel in every sense. However, minor innovations and differences in the game added extra fun to the game. If you like Borderlands games, you should also check out this game. If you’re bad with Borderlands games, this is not the game to fix you up. If you have a group of 4 friends (3 or 2) and you’re looking for a game to play, it’s a good idea to give Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands a chance because it offers a really enjoyable co-op mode. Finally, let me say this: If Borderlands 4 is coming, they need to change something seriously because even I who like Borderlands got bored.
