It is estimated that there are 4.1 million infected websites in the world today. This figure was obtained from the analysis of the certificate provider Sectigo.
The main danger is that most of these sites (93 percent) are not blacklisted and search engines appear easily in search results. The most popular among these malicious software is Filehacker, which shows itself in a third of the sites.
Sectigo believes these sites automate attacks. In 2021, bots generated 5.5x more traffic than humans, which equates to an average of more than 2,300 bot visits per site per week. At the same time, it is stated that the volume of human traffic has decreased.
“Malicious bots can programmatically visit websites and identify vulnerabilities in the code to perform their attacks, such as stealing data or adding malware,” says Jason Soroko of Sectigo.
