Technology giant Google introduced the Equiano underwater internet cable, which will connect Europe to Togo, Nigeria, Namibia, South Africa and Saint Helena in 2019. As part of this initiative, the company announced the completion of the first step from Lisbon, Portugal, to Lome, Togo.

Faster internet will be offered at a lower price

According to an economic impact assessment conducted by Africa Practice and Genesis Analytics, higher internet speeds in Togo will result in a better user experience and better service thanks to Google’s new service. Low internet prices are expected to be offered.

Internet speed in the country is expected to increase from 10 Mbps in 2021 to 21 Mbps in 2025, while retail prices are expected to decrease by 14% in the same period. Offering faster internet at lower prices will allow people to access the internet faster. Between 2022 and 2025, Equiano is expected to indirectly create 37,000 new jobs in Togo.
