Although institutions and organizations show their reactions by imposing some sanctions on Russia, these sanctions can sometimes be quite absurd. In the past days, Dostoevsky was banned from being taught in classes just in order to impose sanctions on Russia in some countries, and there were many reactions afterwards. Again, a similarly strange sanction came from the Space Foundation. The symposium held in the USA every year on behalf of the Soviet Union Pilot of the time, Yuri Gagarin, who was the first person in space, signed an interesting sanction ‘for the purpose of censorship’.
The sharing that the name of the symposium, which has been held for 37 years with the name ‘Yuri’s Night’, has been changed, became the agenda on social media. Although it is thought that the name of the symposium was changed as a reaction to Russia, Gagarin is loved not only by Russians but also by Ukrainian citizens. For this reason, the change made in the name of the symposium with this thought in mind also drew reaction from the Ukrainian people.
Space Foundation removed the post after backlash
The non-profit Space Foundation has renamed the ‘Yuri’s Night’ symposium scheduled for April as ‘Space Celebration: He announced that he would change it to ‘Discover Next’. The foundation, which said that they decided to ‘censorship’ due to the tension between Russia and Ukraine, which greatly affected the whole world, removed its sharing after the reactions. Many people on social media shared that the renaming of the event cannot be related to the current occupation and that Yuri Gagarin is an important name not only for the Russians but for the whole world. At the same time, even if the foundation did this to show its support for Ukraine; Gagarin is a name that is loved enough by the Ukrainian people to paint buildings on buildings.
