From Apple comes the monster processor M2 Extreme: 48 CPUs and 128 GPU cores

In the summer of 2020, Apple announced that all of its computers are seamlessly migrated to its own M-series chips. Although the M1 series was launched at the end of the same year, the second full-fledged chip generation never came to light.

However, insider information indicates that developments worth waiting for are on the way. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company is working hard on the Apple M2 processor lineup, which will again be based on the new Mac Pro.

Apple M2 processor specifications

The M2 Extreme, which will form the basis of the computer, will reportedly receive 48 CPU cores and 96 to 128 GPU cores, depending on the model. Apple is also preparing M2 Ultra chips (24 CPU cores and 48/64 GPU cores), M2 Max, M2 Pro and M2 models. According to Gurman, the M2 chipset lineup will consist of

• M2 – 8 CPU cores, 9/10 GPU cores;
• M2 Pro – 12 processor cores, 16 GPU cores;
• M2 Max – 12 CPU cores, 32 GPU cores;
• M2 Ultra – 24 CPU cores, 48/64 GPU cores;
• M2 Extreme – 48 CPU cores, 96/128 GPU cores.

It is stated that the first M2 laptops to appear will be the updated Mac mini alongside the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. We will see these computers closer to the summer of 2022. Presumably at WWDC, the company will unveil the M1 Ultra and Mac Pro with 7K Apple Pro Display. The remaining devices will receive upgrades before the end of 2023.
