There are nuclear power plants in many parts of the world. However, although there are more than 400 nuclear power plants, there is no permanent nuclear waste site. To date, nuclear waste has been stored in various tanks or converted into glass using vitrification. But experts have a new plan for this waste.

Nuclear waste will be stored in underground warehouses in Finland after 2024

Experts who have been researching nuclear waste for a while decided to collect the waste in an underground warehouse. The waste tomb will be created deep in the Finnish village of Eurajoki. The nuclear waste disposal site, which will be named Onkalo, which means “deep pit” in Finnish, will be used in 2024 if it goes as planned. If everything goes as planned, Finland will be the first country to implement this idea.

Nuclear waste will be transported to Onkalo in the form of spent uranium fuel rods placed in copper barrels. These barrels are planned to remain in the nuclear grave for 100,000 years. Waste has become a subject followed with concern by many experts today. However, Finnish officials state that they deliberately chose the region and took all precautions.

Among the reasons why it was chosen deep in the village of Eurajoki, first of all, it is rural and far from human life. Since the contact of nuclear waste with water is dangerous, the tomb will be built inside a solid piece of rock. In addition, nuclear waste will first be stored in a cast iron container and covered with a layer of noble argon gas. Finally, the entire setup will be placed in a copper barrel.

However, despite all these precautions, corrosion is also on the agenda. However, experts say that they have taken precautions regarding this as well. The idea of a nuclear tomb is being implemented for the first time. However, there are countries that want to follow this idea. These include the USA and France. However, the fact that it is not yet accepted by the society causes the projects to be suspended.
