Apple unveiled a number of exciting new devices at its March Event, but the M1-powered 27-inch iMac didn’t take the stage. Moreover, when the event was over, Apple also stopped selling the model it launched in 2020.

It looks like those expecting a refurbished and upgraded iMac with a bigger screen in the near future will be disappointed: Sources speaking to 9to5Mac say there is no such plan on their roadmap.

The same news also claims there are 2023 refresh plans for the 24-inch iMac. but a bigger Mac doesn’t appear in the plans.

There has been some speculation that the 27-inch iMac will get an upgrade with an M1 or M2 processor, or even that Apple might bring back the super-powered iMac Pro we saw in 2017, but for now, that seems unlikely.

While these are not official for now, 9to5Mac states that the same sources have previously received hints of Mac Studio and Studio Display’s existence. Therefore, the transmitted information is likely to be correct.

We do not have internal sales data from Apple. But with the company discontinuing the 27-inch iMac, we can assume that in the last few years more and more people have opted for the cheaper, less powerful 24-inch version over the larger model.

This was confirmed with the release of Mac Studio and Studio Display: Two devices were offered instead of one. This allowed users to spend within their budget.

Apple could provide more power and better cooling by eliminating the all-in-one form factor – probably for now. Mac Studio carries the brand new M1 Ultra chipset and has a very high price tag.

Studio Display offers the same 27-inch screen area as the newly discontinued iMac, so the parallels are clearly visible. For professional users who need high-end components in their Mac computers and can afford to pay for it, the Mac Studio/Studio Display combination could be seen as the new iMac Pro.
