Apple released the first GaN (gallium nitride) power adapter for the redesigned 16-inch MacBook Pro in the form of a 140W USB-C power adapter last year. According to rumors, Apple may release a new charger this year, smaller than its predecessors, that takes advantage of GaN technology.

Apple may launch a GaN-based 30W charger this year
According to a Twitter post by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple this year may introduce a new 30W charger using gallium nitride (GaN), which enables chargers to generate less heat. Kuo underlines that the new charger could likely feature a “new form factor design” that would make it smaller than Apple’s current 30W charger.
Apple may have designed this new charger for devices that require lower wattage such as iPhone, iPad or MacBook Air. It is not yet clear whether the new 30W charger will ship in the box of compatible devices.
