For a long time, Apple’s use of lightning charging port was constantly on the agenda, because the European Union and many countries were inviting Apple to switch to the unified type-c charging model. However, as far as we can understand from Apple’s unresponsiveness to these calls, the Silicon Valley giant does not want to change the charging model.

Still, Apple may actually be buying itself time, as it hasn’t publicly rejected the requests and terms of regulatory authorities in various countries. There are even reports that Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, is considering eliminating the iPhone charging port altogether. It may only use wireless charging on iPhones in the future.

Wireless charging era coming?

The iPhone charging port will likely be eliminated sooner or later. Whether it’s an iOS or Android device, wireless charging technology will be the most common charging method in the future, it’s obvious. However, research and development on Wireless charging will be a little slow.

This is because it is blocked. Although wireless charging technology goes up to 120W in China, there is a law that prevents the use of wireless charging technology above 50W. This is a bottleneck in the development of wireless charging technology.

Apple, on the other hand, lags behind in wireless charging technology as well as in general charging technology. The latest iPhone 13 series theoretically supports around 15W but in practice, the iPhone 13 series only supports 12W wireless charging. With this technology, it takes 1 hour and 45 minutes to fully charge the iPhone 13 Pro Max. In a smartphone industry where most flagship phones are fully charged within 30 minutes, that’s pretty disappointing.

So, for now, although the claims that Apple will get rid of charging ports create a small movement, it seems that we will have to wait a little longer before we can benefit from wireless charging efficiently and get rid of cables completely.
