Facebook launched a special platform for university students on September 10, 2020 for pilot use. Campus was created for students only, as an internet network that allows students with common interests to connect with each other.

To use the campus, students were connected with their graduation year next to their university e-mail, and in this way, students could reach events and groups belonging to their university. Now, the company has decided to close the application it offers to university students. Here are the details…

Facebook Campus is closing on March 10

The news that will upset university students indicates that Facebook Campus will be closed after March 10. The app will be shut down and Campus profiles, groups, posts, and other data will be deleted, as Facebook reported in an in-app message. Users can download data with an export tool before the application is unplugged.

The company announced that they initially aimed to bring students closer to each other with this application, but they decided that Facebook groups were the best way to do this. Social media consultant Matt Navarra reported on Twitter that some students reported this message they received and sent a screenshot of it. The fact that there are not many students saddened by this news indicates that perhaps the company is right in this decision.

With the increase of COVID-19, schools switched to distance education and in this process, there was great hope for the application. However, Campus, rather than being a separate app, was viewable by clicking “More” next to many Facebook verticals. There is a high probability that this situation may have adversely affected the use of the social network.

After mid-2021, 30 more schools were added to the platform. This made the feature available in a total of 60 US colleges and universities. Facebook told TechCrunch that there are currently 204 schools in the pilot program.

The company spokesperson, who approved of Facebook’s decision to shut down the Campus network, said the following:

We have decided to terminate our Facebook Campus pilot. We’ve learned a lot about the best ways to support college students, and one of the most effective tools to help bring them together is Facebook Groups. We have notified students at test schools that the Campus is no longer available and have recommended relevant college Facebook groups for them to join.

What do you guys think about Facebook closing Campus? Would you like the platform to be rolled out from pilot and rolled out globally? Or are Facebook groups easier for college students to socialize with? Do not forget to share your ideas and opinions with us in the comments.
