The crisis after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues to grow. Faced with heavy sanctions from the USA and Europe, the Kremlin reacts very harshly. Russia, which imposed restrictions on Facebook and similar applications yesterday, now spoke about the International Space Station.
Speaking about the International Space Station (ISS), a joint project of the USA, Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada, Russian officials said that the cooperation could be broken. It was underlined that the station could fall to the USA or Europe.
International Space Station threat from Russia
Head of Russian space agency Ruscosmos, Dmitriy Rogozin, warned that the sanctions announced Thursday, February 24, could have dire consequences for the International Space Station program. Saying that Russia is responsible for the navigation and control units of the ISS, Rogozin said that if they stop fulfilling this task, the station may hit the Earth uncontrollably.
He underlined that in case of a possible collision, it could fall into Europe and the USA. Rogozin, who has already accused the United States of not treating Russian cosmonauts on an equal footing with other colleagues, said that if there were further provocations, it could irreversibly break the agreement for the International Space Station.
What do the sanctions include?
Trying to pressure Russia to discourage the invasion, the USA and the European Union cut off the country’s access to many high-tech products. At the same time, a series of measures were taken to weaken the economic power of the country and cause a crisis.
In addition, US President Biden said in a statement the other day that a general embargo will be implemented that includes obstructions targeting Putin’s inner circle. He also stated that he is aware of the rise in gasoline prices and that these sanctions will limit the effects of Russia on energy prices.
