A hacker who was found to play free games by cracking the software of game consoles was fined millions of dollars.
Millions of dollars fine for hacker who broke Nintendo Switch software
As it is known, Team Xecuter hacker group, which broke the software of various game consoles, especially Nintendo Switch, and allowed pirated games to be played, was crashed in 2020. In this context, it was announced that one of the members of the group, Gary Bowser, was sentenced to 40 months in prison. Of course, we can say that the real shock for the hacker in question was not imprisonment, but a fine.
Gary Bowser was ordered to pay 10 million dollars in damages to Nintendo in the civil lawsuit concluded in December 2021. It turned out that the hacker recently agreed to pay an additional $4.5 million to the company in another lawsuit.
According to the emerging information, Team Xecuter, which includes Gary Bowser, caused Nintendo to lose more than 65 million dollars due to the development and sale of devices that allow pirated games to be played on consoles. Apart from that, it should be noted that the FBI and various security forces continue to work to catch the hacker’s accomplices.
For now, the net damage of Team Xecuter organization to Nintendo is unknown. However, we expect more details to emerge in the future. It is not yet known how Gary Bowser, who was found to be living in a small flat in the Dominican Republic as a result of the researches, will pay the fine.
