Nvidia, whose long-term acquisition negotiations with ARM failed and cost more than $1 billion in the current quarter, still hasn’t given up on its technology.

Nvidia’s move to ARM

Nvidia’s partnership with ARM actually goes back 20 years. Nvidia, which received an ARM license in the early 2000s, appeared before consumers with Tegra chipsets. However, unable to compete with rising stars such as Qualcomm and MediaTek, he had to make do with the Shield and Nintendo consoles.

Nvidia announces new ARM-based server processor

Nvidia for processor solutions that will support graphics technologies in the new era It focused on the ARM architecture. This new processor architecture, named Grace, will be on the market in the first months of 2023.

The naming was inspired by Grace Hopper, one of the pioneers in the history of computer programming. The new architecture promises 10 times higher performance in complex artificial intelligence and performance-oriented operations.

Grace architecture connects to Nvidia graphics units with fourth generation Nvidia NVLink connection technology and can reach 900GB/s speeds. There is a 600GB/s connection speed from processor to processor.

LPDDR5x memory subsystem offers twice the bandwidth and 10 times better energy efficiency than DDR4 memory. In theory, 5000GB/s bandwidth is in question. It also provides flexibility by combining system and HBM memory in a single memory address.

Nvidia’s various graphics accelerators for servers used x86 architecture, but Grace architecture will be at a much better point in terms of performance and efficiency.

It was known that Grace architecture was prepared for server and artificial intelligence systems, but Nvidia states that it will also be used in the game industry. GeForce Now is perfect for this, but it is a matter of curiosity what kind of move will be in player graphics cards.
