Samsung recently introduced the Galaxy S22 series, and we examined all 3 phones closely and gave you our first impressions. Again, while we were explaining the technical features of Samsung’s Galaxy S22 series, we also mentioned that the phones caused confusion about the screen refresh rate. In the bulletin, Samsung updated the variable refresh rate features of the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22 + from 10Hz-120Hz to 48Hz-120Hz. This move of Samsung caused rumors that it was not transparent, but soon an official statement came from Samsung on the subject.

The official release explains, in part, why Samsung changed the variable screen refresh rate features of the Galaxy S22 and Galaxy S22+ right after the Unpacked event. While Samsung says that it uses the same display components on both devices, it states that these components support 48 – 120 Hz variable refresh rate.

However, Samsung says it uses a proprietary technology to improve the phones’ power consumption. While this technology allows the screen to reduce data transfer rates up to 10Hz, on the other hand, the screens of the Galaxy S22 v Galaxy S22 + do not actually go down to 10 Hz. The 10 Hz – 120 Hz variable refresh rate specified in the technical specification sheet of the phones is used to express the proprietary technology used in the devices. Samsung explains:

“The screen refresh rate was initially listed as 10 to 120 Hz (10 to 120 frames per second) and later we chose to update this specification to comply with the industry standard more widely recognized by consumers. , they can make sure there are no changes to the hardware specifications, and both devices support 120Hz for smooth scrolling.”

While this sounds good, Samsung’s way of describing “proprietary technology” seems unclear. Less confusion and a clearer form of communication will make people more confident in the brand. We think that Samsung has learned a lesson from this as well.
