Google’s social networking project Google+ was launched in 2011. In the first period, the service, which accepted members with the invitation system like Clubhouse, was opened to everyone aged 18 and over, provided that they use their real name after a while. However, Google Plus has never been a solid alternative to Instagram, Facebook or Twitter.
The personal version of the social network, abbreviated with the “G+” icon, was shut down in 2019 due to low usage rate and security vulnerabilities. But companies and organizations were able to use the service through Google Workspace (formerly G Suite). The service, which continues to operate under the name ‘Google Currents’ for business accounts, has come to the end of the road.
Google+ blends into the dusty pages of history
Google said in its blog post that it will shut down the Google Currents service from 2023. He shared the information that users will carry their content and communities to the Google Spaces service, which it launched last year.
Spaces available through Google Workspace; It is a mix of Slack and Discord developed to organize people, topics and projects jointly. Working integrated with all Workspace applications such as Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Meet, Spaces replaced Google Currents, the business version of Google Plus.
Organizations using Google Currents (Google+) will gradually begin to migrate to Spaces in the coming days. Underlining that it will help customers in this process, Google said that it will gradually turn off some features of Currents in order to speed up the transition. When the calendars show the year 2023, the service will be completely retired.
Spaces is improving as Currents is closing
Google said it will add a few new features to Spaces before Currents shuts down. It superficially announced these innovations in the form of content moderation tools, improved search, greater community support, and more. The company added that it is investing in features that will provide enterprise-grade security such as data protection, data loss prevention and Application Vault.
