With the introduction of electric cars into our lives, the driverless car experience has also started to gain importance. This sector, where Google took the first serious step, took a step further with Tesla autonomous driving. As of last year, many companies have started to test driverless cars for the future automobile technology. Judging by the latest figures, fully autonomous driving experiments have come a long way.

Self-driving cars have traveled 6 million kilometers in California alone

The fully self-driving car experiments that Google started in 2014 have begun to bear fruit. The robotaxis initiative, which later became Waymo, is the most common self-driving car initiative on the streets of California. Accordingly, Google’s self-driving car project Waymo has traveled more than 3 million 700 kilometers in the state of California this year. As you know, Waymo is conducting its first robotaxis trials in San Francisco. However, it is unclear when these trials will take effect. Judging by the intensity of the tests, California may be the new destination for the Waymo robotaxis service.

Cruise robotaxis is preparing to enter service on the streets of San Francisco

Following Waymo, another important robotaxis project Cruise followed this record. Accordingly, the project, which continues in cooperation with General Motors and Honda, covered 1 million 400 thousand kilometers in California. These two important projects carried out 80 percent of the tests in the state.

Again, the two companies conducted most of their self-driving car tests in California. The Cruise robotaxis project is one step ahead of Waymo. Accordingly, the project began work last week to go public for the first time on the streets of San Francisco. The initiative is expected to be the first robotaxis project to come into service very soon.

After these two companies, the company that made the most road tests was Pony.ai. Accordingly, the initiative covered more than 490 thousand kilometers.

Although projects that offer fully autonomous driving have made record progress, vehicles may be out of order during these roads. This failure rate is among the figures that reveal how successful the project is. Accordingly, Waymo reported 1,609 kilometers, or 0.126 downtimes per 1000 miles. Accordingly, Waymo was disabled 292 times in total. That’s a lot compared to the 21 shutdowns the company announced in 2020.

Cruise is in a much better situation with its downtime. Accordingly, the robotaxis project has a downtime rate of 0.003 per 1,000 miles. In this sense, the project reported 20 downtimes.
