Scientists examining health records concluded that people who survived Covid-19 were at a significantly higher risk of cardiovascular complications. The study revealed that patients had a 55% increased risk of developing cardiovascular complications between one month and one year after recovery.
Significant increase in heart diseases
In the study conducted by Washington University scientists and the results of which were published in Nature Medicine, it was determined that those who survived Covid-19 had heart attack, heart muscle inflammation, sudden death, stroke, coronary artery disease. There was a significant increase in the risk of developing cardiovascular complications such as heart disease, heart failure and arrhythmia.
Within the scope of the research, the health information of approximately 150 thousand people whose Covid-19 test was positive and recovered between March 1, 2020 and January 15, 2021 were examined. Two more datasets were created for comparison. The first of these groups consists of more than 5.6 million patients who did not have Covid-19 during the same time period. The other comparison group included more than 5.8 million people who were sick from March 2018 to January 2019.
In one-year heart health examinations, it was determined that heart failure and death occurred 4% more in those who survived Covid-19 than in those who were not infected. This rate was recorded as 72% for coronary artery disease, 63% for heart attack and 52% for stroke.
When the researchers made the grand total of all diseases and compared them, it was concluded that those who were infected were 55% more likely to suffer a major cardiovascular event, including heart attack, stroke and death, than those without Covid-19.

Because of the chronic nature of these conditions, they will likely have long-term consequences for patients and health systems, as well as broad implications for economic productivity and life expectancy.” said.
***It is reported that very few of the people whose health information was examined were vaccinated without being positive, since vaccination was not widely carried out between the dates of the research. The study also excludes Delta and Omicron variants.
