The Samsung Galaxy S series has been competing with the iPhone series in many ways for years, and it looks like we can add software updates to the list now. It has been talked about that Samsung will offer four-year Android updates and five-year security patches on its important devices.
A leaked Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 press release by Evan Blass, who has a notable history of leaks, illustrates this. In particular, it is stated that the Samsung Galaxy S21 series (including the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE), Samsung Galaxy S22 series, Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 series, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 will receive updates during this period.
Considering that many Android devices only get two years of updates, this is a very important decision and is especially important for older devices like the Samsung Galaxy S21 series. Samsung had already outstripped its competitors by offering three years of Android updates and four years of security patches on these phones, and this decision was generally praised. But it looks like each device will now get an extra year.
The rest of this press release mostly repeats what we’ve already heard about the Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 series. For example, the feature list that Blass previously leaked is almost complete.
There are a few details we haven’t fully clarified, including the release date. This press release states that pre-orders will start on February 9, but delivery will start on February 25.
It is also stated that if you pre-order a Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra you will receive a Book Cover Keyboard with it, while if you pre-order a Galaxy Tab S8 or Tab S8 Plus you will receive a Book Cover Keyboard Slim with it.
There is also mention of an Armor Aluminum frame that is said to be 30% more scratch resistant and 40% less likely to bend than the Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 series.
