The world’s largest cut diamond is about to go up for auction. Nicknamed “Enigma,” the extraordinary gem is a billion-year-old black diamond allegedly from outer space. This is an extremely rare carbonado black diamond, the auction house reported. These diamonds are generally between 2.6 and 3.8 billion years old. It contains nitrogen, hydrogen and the mineral osbornite, which is usually found in metorites. This strengthens the claims that the diamond came from outer space.
However, there is a situation that does not comply with the general rule. Pieces of diamonds from outer space are usually nano-sized. However, this diamond is huge compared to them and weighs 555.55 carats. It is thought that the Enigma diamond may have formed as a result of an asteroid hitting our planet. The 55-sided Diamond entered the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest cut diamond in 2006.
Enigma is expected to sell for over $6 million at auction.
