The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) successfully landed the Perseverance rover and Ingenuity helicopter on Mars for exploration in February of last year. The rover, who will collect rock and sediment samples on the Red Planet as part of the Mars Exploration Program and search for signs of ancient microscopic life, has recently signed an interesting record.

Longest ride on Mars in one day from Perseverance rover

Perseverance, sent for Mars exploration, collected many samples and obtained interesting images during his tenure. The traveler vehicle, which still continues its duty, became the agenda with a record this time. While continuing his investigations, he broke the record for the longest ride of a spacecraft by traveling 245.76 meters during a Martian day.

The previous record belonged to the Opportunity vehicle, NASA’s vehicle used for Mars exploration between 2005 and 2018. The vehicle set a record by traveling just over 228 meters on a Martian day in March 2005. The Perseverance rover achieved this record by traveling 245.76 meters. A full day on Mars takes 24 hours and 40 minutes.

It is not yet clear when the Perseverance rover’s mission will end. In addition to taking interesting pictures of Mars, it also collects rock and sediment samples. What he gains during the mission is expected to be useful for a crewed landing on the planet as well. The exact prototype of the Perseverance rover started the tour on October 30 under the name Roving with Perseverance.

The region where the Perseverance traveler is located stands out as a very rough terrain. The most important reason for breaking this record on such a difficult ground is that it has a special autonomous technology. There are also 3D maps that help the six-wheeler avoid obstacles such as large boulders and loose pieces of sand.
